Use of a Bee Beetle Trap

A bee beetle trap is used to control and manage small hive beetles (Aethina tumida), which can damage honeybee colonies by feeding on pollen, honey, and brood. The beetles also cause honey fermentation and hive destruction if left unchecked.

How to Use a Bee Beetle Trap

  1. Choose the Right Type of Trap:

    • Oil Trap: Uses vegetable oil or mineral oil to drown beetles.

    • Baited Trap: Uses bait like apple cider vinegar or pollen to attract beetles.

  2. Trap Placement:

    • Inside the Hive: Place the trap between frames near the brood area where beetles tend to hide.

    • On the Bottom Board: If using a bottom trap, ensure it’s properly positioned under the screen.

  3. Fill the Trap with Oil or Bait:

    • Oil-based Traps: Fill halfway with vegetable oil, mineral oil, or soapy water to drown beetles.

    • Baited Traps: Add a small amount of apple cider vinegar or pollen to lure beetles.

  4. Monitor and Replace Regularly:

    • Check the trap every 7–14 days and clean or replace as needed.

    • If using an oil trap, dispose of dead beetles and refill with fresh oil.

  5. Combine with Other Control Methods:

    • Reduce Hive Gaps: Beetles hide in cracks, so use tight-fitting hive components.

    • Keep Colonies Strong: A strong bee population can chase beetles into traps.

    • Monitor Regularly: Inspect hives for beetle activity, especially in warm, humid climates.
